6 Tips to Selecting an Outfit

Hello everyone! I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend. I was trying to figure out what to wear to church yesterday so I decided to stop by and share my quick tips to selecting an outfit.

My top 6 are the following;

  1. Assess how you feel – This is a great place to start because it helps you choose what will compliment your feeling or even change how you feel. For example, if you’re not in tune with your feelings, you can select an outfit that is dark, plain and shabby without realizing that you just dressed yourself to match your feelings and sometimes that only prolongs that feeling. Sometimes the secret is to dress the opposite of what you feel if it’s negative so you can snap out of your funk. I’m sharing this because it works a lot for me. If I’m feeling tired, down or upset, I may decide to pick something colorful and fun to wear and by the time I’m done my mood has lightened up. IMG_5772 (2)
  2. Decide how you want to present yourself – Understanding yourself will help you know what exactly you want to express through your outfit and what statement you want to make. According to Miuccia Prada, “What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today when human contacts go so fast. Fashion is instant language.” So, my suggestion is always look your best and present yourself in the best way possible. IMG_5781 (2)
  3. Ask yourself if you are comfortable – Yes I said comfortable because some people don’t believe in that. They think discomfort comes with the territory of looking good as the saying goes, “No pain, no gain” but I disagree. I think you should be comfortable in whatever you wear because if you’re not, it shows. We can all tell when someone is uncomfortable in their skin and in their clothes even though they may look great. Also I know a person is more confident when they are comfortable and guess what, confidence is sexy. IMG_5743 (2)
  4. Decide on your Style – Being stylish doesn’t necessarily equate to trends. Style is elegance, sophistication, edgy, punk etc. You can buy fashion items/accessories and even high end brands but money can’t buy you style…. well unless you pay a stylist to do the work. You have to decide on your style and decide on how you will wear an outfit, how you can mix fabrics, patterns, colors and accessories. IMG_5750 (3)IMG_5751 (2)
  5. Figure out your body type – Everyone is unique and special which is why we all come in different shapes and sizes, with different features. By understanding your body type, regardless of what you hate or love about your body will help you a lot. You have to make choices that will enhance your features and complement your body type while masking  perceived troubled areas. IMG_5755 (2)6. What’s the Occasion – Last but not least is what are you dressing up for. Where are you going to, what type of event is it, what’s the setting or the dress code? All these can help you in deciding what to wear. IMG_5765 (2)

So, next time you have hard time selecting an outfit for the day or an event, use these tips and by the time you get to step 6 you’ll be ready to slay.

Wildflower Wednesday

Good morning! I hope everyone is having a wonderful Wednesday. This was my look this past Sunday; Bright, Bold & Beautiful. I decided to mix colors and styles by pairing a casual blue denim shirt with my go to Print (Ankara) Skirt.  It’s interesting how a plain shirt can be easily dressed up with an elegant midi skirt and platform sandals which are both classy and timeless. I could easily have been from the 60s especially with my Afro. Like icing on a cake, I finished up my look by adding my light pink shoulder bag to compliment my shoes.

Bootcamp, Rice and Smoosh Cookies

Hi guys, I hope everyone had a lovely weekend because I know I did. A quick recap of my weekend goes like this;

On Saturday  I woke up early to take a walk, pray and meditate as I usually do almost every morning, then I went to Boot camp (I’ll blog more about this later). After my morning workout I stopped by to see family, make some phone calls and ran some errands before heading to Rice University for the Alumni event. No I’m not alumni although I’ve been considering getting an MBA from there to help me be a better Entrepreneur, but that too is another story for another time. I attended the family event with hubby (he works at Rice) and a friend of mine.

The event was fun, they had good food and I got to meet more of hubbys coworkers but the highlight of my day was meeting this little girl who was probably around 4 years old running around in the hallway. All she wanted to do was play and that was exactly what we did, because we spent some time playing catch. She was so excited for me to chase her and for her to chase and catch me. It was fun for 2 seconds before I got tired lol…. I’m always so amused at how much energy children have to run around and play and it’s always so refreshing to see how children get so excited and happy over the simplest of things.

Anyway, after the event we just had to go around the corner in Rice Village to check out Smoosh Cookies. I’m new to the Houston area and part of my plan as someone who loves adventure is to enjoy the sights, sounds and taste of the area. I came across them on Instagram and was seduced by the pictures. Since then I’ve wanted to try their Cookie and Ice cream sandwich and as you can see, I finally did. I had the Chocolate Cookies with Butter Pecan Ice Cream and Coconut Topping and it was 2 steps away from heaven. Yes! I’m a foodie. I thank God each day for all my senses especially the sense of taste. The ability to taste, savor and enjoy something you consume is priceless. The cookies were moist like they were freshly baked and the combination of flavors were perfect.

TBT – Flame On

Flame on aka Hot like fire is how I felt this past Sunday. I’m not sure if it was the style of the outfit, the Head wrap or just the bright colors. Whatever it was, I felt sexy and sassy and had to take some pictures at the end of the day.

IMG_5648 (2)

I love my Head wraps. At first it started off as a way to not have to deal with my hair, but soon it turned to another of my fashion accessories with all the prints and colors. It’s like a crown and I feel like an African Queen.

IMG_5624 (2)

Once upon a time all I liked to wear was black, grey and dark colors but that has long changed. I love colors and I feel vibrant like the colors I wear.

I love mixing prints and colors. I always joke that’s I’m a walking candy store or a rainbow.

I fell in love with this Vest when I saw the combo of prints and colors. My kind of style.

Loving Hearts

Hello everyone,

I hope everyone had a good week. While we were most likely going through our weekly routine, people were being terrorized and killed all around the world. Yes! I said terrorism and Yes! I said all over the world. Terrorism occurs every day in our world today but we usually just hear or talk about the big, eye catching, popular one which is usually based on our environment or what the media shares.

According to Wikipedia, Terrorism is the use of violence or threat of violence in order to coerce a political, religious, or ideological change. It is also an unlawful use of violence, force or intimidation against people or their property. So, when someone blows up a plane, an airport or a property, that is terrorism. When another person kidnaps people, takes hostages or intimidates a region or village that is also terrorism. Likewise, when a certain group or tribe decide to force another group away from their home and take their resources or when a man beats his wife because he thinks she doesn’t listen, that is terrorism too.

Therefore, I’m making a point that terrorism occurs in different ways and has everything to do with the individual (man, woman or child) and nothing really to do with their religion, the color of their skin, their ethnicity, gender etc.  The fact is, there are terrorists everywhere, in every country and in every community who will continue to inspire fear, anger and hatred to further their agenda but we cannot let that change us from being good and stand up for justice and support people who are being terrorized or oppressed.

I decided to share this poem I wrote over a decade ago as a reminder that we have the power to change the world starting with ourselves and our environment. I get very sad sometimes because the future looks bleak with all the fear, anger, pain, paranoia, hatred, prejudice and ignorance I see in the world today. People have let these emotions get the best of them. It always breaks my heart when I hear all the bad things going on in the world but what has been more heart breaking is when people say “I will not pray for a country X, Y, Z because they used to terrorize my ancestors” or “I will not pray for them being killed or hurt because they didn’t support and pray for me”. I’m sorry to say this, but if you think like this and you’re praying to my God (Jesus Christ) as a Christian, this logic doesn’t work and this is not how he wants us to be. If you disagree and you need me to further explain to you, you can leave a comment or send me an email and I’ll try my best to explain.

I just want to remind everyone that according to my Christian faith, that we all have been called to love despite the challenges of life. Not love when it’s easy and convenient but love when life is hard and difficult because when we are intentional and choose to love, sometimes that intentional unconditional love is the most powerful to bring about a change in the life of another person especially when you support and stand up against an issue that doesn’t directly affect you with no judgement, personal benefit or strings attached. That’s beautiful.

So, please remember that as you navigate through your day. Please don’t be too self-righteous and judgmental. Try to “Forgive” more, “Pray” more and “Love” more.

As St. Francis said, “The measure of God’s love, is to love without measure”.

Happy Easter!!!

Loving Hearts

Loving hearts are the evergreen gardens.

Loving thoughts are the growing roots.

Loving words are the beautiful flowers.

Loving deeds are the sweetest fruits.

Love is Life, which many never find.

Love is the greatest of stars.

For only in darkness, grows hatred and strife.

Only in conflict, grows anarchy and doom.

Let Love brighten your world.

And rid you of all anger and fear.

Love is power, Love is peace.

Love has no boundaries, Love reigns in you.

Teal we Spring a Break

Happy New Week! I hope you all enjoyed your weekend because I know I did. It was great being back home after being away for 1 week for work. For many who don’t know me, I am a Nurse Practitioner so “Yes” I am a woman who has a passion for Health, Fashion and everything else in between.

I know I’ve been “MIA” for a few weeks but it’s been for a good reason, “I Promise”. I’ll update you all soon enough with specific details, from working on new designs and photo shoots to update my store for 3reeC’s (Chic Creations and Collections, LLC.) to other projects we’ve been working on under BIH (Bosses in Heels, LLC.) to support small business owners and to empower women in business and leadership roles.

I also hope Spring Break was everything you hoped it would be and then some. Spring is like a Friday, full of life and possibilities that the hard part (Winter or the Work week) is over and it’s time to inhale the fresh fragrance, play under the rainbows and dance with the flowers under the golden star. Spring is my favorite, it’s an awakening so make every moment count. Have a fabulous week!

The Picture

In the darkest part of my room

In the inner most area of my crib

Sits an old but authentic picture.

The picture so dark

The picture so dull

But yet it sits with so much life.

The picture is of a girl

The picture is of a loner

Who stays on the outside and observes life as it is.

She watches from the dark corner of her chamber

She observes the world and learns its secret

But never comes out of her shell to be a part of it.

The picture looks plain

The picture looks worthless

But there is a priceless story behind it, which people only dream of.

Winter Body

(LOL) I know my title is probably confusing, Let Me Explain. A couple of months ago, some of my friends and I decided to be more diligent and disciplined in maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle and of course Lose Weight. Most people usually try to lose weight when summer is approaching especially women so they can look good in their bikinis but we actually challenged ourselves after summer was over and Fall or should I say Winter (we’re in Texas) was fast approaching.

So, instead of saying Summer Body, it became the Winter Body Challenge for us. The idea is to give ourselves time to do the work required to change our lifestyle in a healthy way, so by Spring/Summer we can have the body we want instead of waiting last minute and doing a crash diet.

Our goal is to lose a certain amount of weight, drop a couple of dress size and most especially be proactive in sculpting our body into the shape we want so we’d fit into our old clothes better and be more comfortable in our skin.  I’ll keep you all updated on my progress as the months go by, but I have already lost 7lbs and my dress size is now a 10.

I’m not a fitness expert, I’m not a physical trainer or a coach but I’m a Nurse Practitioner so I understand Health and most importantly I’m a Woman who has struggled with her weight since she was 13. So stay tuned as I chronicle my journey (this is going to be interesting).

Elegant Vintage

“Elegant Vintage” that was the theme for my friends wedding in Houston a few months ago. It was a very beautiful and warm May afternoon and we had just driven 26hours in 2 days from Maryland. It was our first road trip together to Texas and we did it so we could drive down some of our belongings, since we were relocating within a few months to Houston. It was also the first time I was a passenger in a car for over an hour without falling asleep (lol). I had to stay up to keep hubby company and be on the look out while he drove.

The wedding was beautiful, from the grand hall to the fabulous deco and guests. We also had different forms of entertainment at the wedding like the dancing performance by the bride with her sisters, the singing by the groom with his high school/college boys, fun games about the event, a magic show and fireworks to end the night. It was definitely memorable and so much fun.

Since the theme was “Elegant Vintage”, I decided to put my hair in a simple french braid and go with a floral A-line maxi dress that I bought from a small boutique in New York over a year ago. I also chose to accessorize with gold sequined clutch purse, jewelry, sandals and a headband like that of the 1920s. I’m not sure if I pulled it off but I know I felt fabulous and I got lots of compliments at the wedding.

Happy Teusday everyone. I found this picture last night while I was trying to organize myself, since I promised to do more blog posts this year. For those who don’t know me, I love taking pictures. It’s not because I’m vain, although I do like to check myself out occassionally when I’m comfortable in my skin and I feel good and confident, but that’s another story for another post.

I love photographs because growing up my Dad always made us take lots of pictures whenever we travelled, during special moments in our lives or just simply when we were together. Photography for me is beautiful. The Art of capturing Time, Moments & Memories is pure magic. Pictures tell a story and holds lots of memories, from your emotions to your journey through life. For me a Photograph is a Time Machine. It is capturing history in present time for the future, if that makes sense to you.

Anyway, I took these pictures early Spring last year after I was sick for several months and had surgery. Through that experience I had become fearless, I quit my 9-5 job, decided to move to Houston with my husband to work on my business and I was just so appreciative of being alive and was and is still excited for the future.  And this was one of those days that I didn’t care what shape, size or weight I was, I felt great in my skin, I was happy and I felt like a million bucks.
